Spring Showers & Wildflowers
It’s been a month into spring, and I’ve been thinking about how my lifestyle habits and inclinations have changed. I’ve been enjoying the boundless wildflowers that have appeared here in Austin, TX, and little critters like butterflies, beetles, and lizards. Every morning, I’m greeted by the sound of chirping birds, and at night, I hear the droning croak of frogs.
The phrase “April showers bring May flowers” made me ponder a little more recently. I remember the grey and drizzly springs growing up on the East Coast. I hoped for beautiful flowers once the air warmed up in the coming months. In my life now, I found that this time motivated me to seed my intentions further for the year. Spring is the best time to plant since the weather is mild, and you can grow strong roots all year.
I have been deepening my meditation practice, integrating more movement, and studying for my classes after work. I’ve noticed positive results from my efforts and have been tempering myself from doing more drastic short-term changes in favor of lasting, long-term benefits. I started the Spring equinox with a cleanse where I aimed to simplify what I ate to tune more into cravings, cause-effects, and other signals I’d usually miss. After this experiment, I noticed how my body would react to foods, quantity, and timing.
Here are some things I enjoyed this past month:
👅 Favorite Flavors
Salads and lightly cooked veggies (spinach, artichoke, asparagus, mushrooms)
Lean proteins (chicken, turkey, white fish, eggs, legumes, low-fat dairy)
Acidic and bitter flavors (lemon, vinegar, dark greens, fresh and dried herbs)
Bitter herbal teas (dandelion, fennel, aniseed, licorice)
Black coffee
🔁 Repeat Eats
Flax Lavash wrap with turkey, spinach, hummus, and mustard vinaigrette
Lemon chicken bone broth soup with asparagus, radish, peas, and mint
Steamed egg white bites with goat cheese and veggies
Hard-boiled eggs
Edamame fettucini with herb pesto
Chickpea angel hair with beet sauce
💃🏻 Joyful Movement
Increasing circulation (running/walking, hot yoga)
Lymphatic drainage (dry brushing, gua sha)
Fascia release (foam rolling, trigger point massage)
🌎 Earthly Connection
Sunshine, fresh air, and noticing nature during hikes
Discovering species new to me via the Seek app
Wildflowers everywhere - especially lining the highway!
Bird sounds in the morning, and frog sounds at night
Overall, I’ve been craving light, fresh foods. My body wants to move more and connect with nature.
As a little girl, I’ve always wanted to know what it feels like to be a hibernating bear waking up after a long winter of slumber and how it feels to stretch and move about after all that time static inside—seeing the sun, smelling the air, and searching for a first meal.
I can see how wonderful it must be to eat fresh, crisp foods and ease back into activity again.
Have you noticed your habits changing in the springtime?
